Africahit is finally entering the video-sharing market. The beta version has been up for a minute now.It offers the basic features a Youtube or Dailymotion do . You register for free and you can upload, comment on ,watch and add friends to your network.
Our analysis is that they lost any leverage they had when they first launched the site in 2004 . Why would users unsubscribe from Youtube, Dailymotion, Bebo and other platforms ,which are adding widgets and features at a stormy pace much to the benefits of their end- users.
It will help if they are able to develop territorial monopoly, that is to corner the continental African internet users and convince them to use their platform as more get online. They could also establish key partnerships with African Tv networks/ media productions. It would make sense to me for the winner of the Video sharing site to become to African TV networks, media production, marketers, artists and private individuals what Overdrive is to MTV. If and when the consumers know that they can obtain exclusive content from all these sources in addition to home-made content they will tune into. Do not give them content that they can find on Youtube,Dailymotion,Googlevideo, their bootlegged DVD, satellite/cable TV.
